Melanotan 1

Melanocortin receptor agonist

Melanotan 1 is a synthetic linear 13 amino acid analog of the naturally occurring alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. It was originally developed to promote tanning and provide a photoprotective barrier by increasing the production of eumelanin in the skin. It is the only peptide in this class to receive FDA approval, marketed under the brand name Scenesse for the treatment of light sensitivity in patients with erythropoietic protoporphyria.

The primary distinction between Melanotan 1 and Melanotan 2 is receptor selectivity and the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. Melanotan 1 is highly selective for the MC1 receptor found on melanocytes, whereas Melanotan 2 is a non selective agonist that also hits the MC3 and MC4 receptors in the brain. This lack of central nervous system permeability means that Melanotan 1 does not trigger the intense libido enhancement, spontaneous erections, or appetite suppression typically seen with Melanotan 2.

Users often prefer this version because it is significantly milder, with a much lower incidence of severe nausea and facial flushing.

Because it is less potent, the tanning results are generally more gradual and controlled. A typical loading protocol involves a daily subcutaneous injection of 200 mcg for a period of 1 to 2 weeks, followed by a maintenance dose of 100 mcg administered 2 to 3 times per week. Side effects include the darkening of existing moles and freckles.
