Melanotan 2

Non-selective melanocortin agonist

Melanotan II is a synthetic version of the naturally occurring melanocyte stimulating hormone that was originally researched to potentially prevent skin cancer by inducing a protective tan. It functions as a systemic tanning agent that produces a natural looking darkening of the skin, though achieving the full effect usually requires some level of sun or UV exposure to activate the process.

This peptide is particularly effective for those with fair or ginger skin who typically burn rather than tan; users have reported shifting from an extremely pale appearance to a dark Italian or Spanish look in a short period of time. In some cases, the darkening effects even extend to the hair, turning red or blonde hair brown over time.

A unique feature of this peptide is its ability to significantly enhance libido and sexual performance due to its metabolite, Bremelanotide. By acting on the hypothalamus, it can treat sexual arousal disorders and erectile dysfunction, often causing spontaneous erections within fifteen minutes of injection that can last for up to two hundred minutes. This effect is so pronounced that some users report an intense, almost uncontrollable sexual drive. Additionally, it can act as a mild appetite suppressant by targeting specific receptors in the brain, which many find helpful when trying to lean out.

Dosage protocols generally range from 0.1 - 0.5mg, administered daily or every other day. The powder must be reconstituted with bacteriostatic water or bacteriostatic saline and kept refrigerated to preserve its potency. While subcutaneous injection is the most common and bioavailable route, metered nasal sprays are a popular alternative for those seeking a less invasive method, though they require higher or more frequent dosing.

The most common side effect is intense nausea and facial flushing immediately following the injection, often leading users to dose before bed to sleep through the discomfort. Other acute reactions include hot flashes, and the darkening of existing moles or the emergence of new freckles. It is not clear if this is the actual formation of new moles/freckles, or simply moles and freckles that were too light to be seen without the stimulation of Melanotan II.

To prevent these pigmented spots from becoming too prominent, it is often suggested to start with very low doses and ramp up slowly. While the tanning effects can remain for several months after stopping the drug, the sexual and appetite suppressing benefits generally dissipate much faster.
