Nolvadex (Tamoxifen)

SERM commonly used in PCT

Nolvadex is perhaps the most famous SERM in the world, serving two distinct and vital roles: the prevention and reversal of gynecomastia, and the stimulation of the HPTA during post-cycle therapy.

It works by binding to estrogen receptors in the breast tissue, preventing circulating estrogen from attaching and signaling for the growth of glandular tissue. If a user notices spicy or itchy nipples on cycle, Nolvadex is the immediate emergency response.

Beyond its effects on the chest, Nolvadex is a more powerful LH stimulator milligram for milligram than Clomid. Interestingly, while it blocks estrogen in the breast and pituitary, it acts as an estrogen agonist in the liver, which can actually help improve a user's cholesterol profile by increasing HDL levels.

However, Nolvadex is not without its specific downsides. One of the most documented effects is its ability to lower circulating IGF-1 levels by approximately 20% to 25%. For a bodybuilder in a growth phase, this can be a significant drawback, as IGF-1 is a primary driver of muscle hypertrophy. Furthermore, many users report a specific type of brain fog or anhedonia, a loss of interest in hobbies and social interaction, when taking Nolvadex at 20mg or higher. It is also important to note that Nolvadex has a known drug interaction with certain aromatase inhibitors like Arimidex, potentially lowering the blood plasma levels of the AI.

For PCT, the modern consensus is to avoid the high doses of 40mg per day and stick to a steady 10mg to 20mg dose, which is sufficient to restart the system without crushing the user's mental clarity or growth factors.
